pum pum pum di Luciano Maggiore | Toast Project Space

Toast Project Space presents pum pum  pum, Luciano Maggiore | Building B9

Opening on Saturday 28th February at 6.00 pm, until 12th April

Toast Project presents pum pum  pum, a solo exhibition by Luciano Maggiore, on view from 28th February to 12th April.

The opening on 28th February will feature at 18.00, at Building B9 of Manifattura Tabacchi, the sound performance 6, a box, and a couple of chihuahuas (variation No. 1 without the box) curated by Nub, followed at 6.00 pm by the exhibition opening at Toast Project Space. The live performance will also mark the presentation of the LP Mimosa Pudica, produced by Nub Project Space and published by Planam / Planub.

The exhibition unfolds around a fragile, non-autonomous presence that emerges only in relation to its context, avoiding spectacular effects and maintaining an essential, precarious quality. In line with Maggiore’s research on minimal devices and on the relationships between sound, space and presence, pum pum pum investigates manifestation as a contingent event, shaped by circumstances, duration and the audience’s attention.

The exhibition also takes shape as a three-dimensional extension of Mimosa Pudica: while the record constructs a relationship in the absence of the audience, the exhibition expands its space into an installative dimension. The collaboration between Toast Project Space and Nub Project Space thus brings into dialogue the exhibition and performative dimensions as complementary, unstable conditions.

Luciano Maggiore was born in Palermo and lives in London.
His musical research originates in electroacoustic music, a field in which he has explored the performative components of sound, particularly in relation to the perception of the musical act and the phenomena of obscurity that emerge from it.

Using speakers, playback devices, small acoustic objects and bodily sounds, he works on the mechanisms of sound diffusion and staging, employing different media as “effects”. He is interested in repetition and resistance, and his work engages with fields such as behaviourism, non-human animal languages, dance and folklore.

With Louie Rice he founded NO-PA/PA-ON, a project dedicated to the performance of works based on scores, both acoustic and amplified. Since 2025 he has performed on trumpet in a duo with saxophonist Seymour Wright.

From 2004 to 2007 he collaborated with Xing, co-curating with Valerio Tricoli Desco Music, a programme of electronic and electroacoustic music at Raum in Bologna. In London, between 2022 and 2023, he co-curated with Li Song the concert and performance series unspecified unspecified unspecified at Hundred Years Gallery. He is among the founders of Sant’Andrea degli amplificatori, an independent organisation active in Bologna from 2007 to 2015 dedicated to experimental music.
His work has been presented in various contexts across Europe confirm and Asia.

Nub is a curatorial project founded in 2010 by Federico Fiori and Francesca Lenzi.
It offers an interdisciplinary perspective on themes related to contemporary culture, experimental music and sound research, with a particular focus on out-of-format languages. Concerts, performances, workshops, happenings and residencies are the main tools through which its programme develops, with the aim of creating an intimate space for exchange and dialogue between artists and audiences: an open laboratory and hybrid environment where a multiplicity of languages can find their natural ground for expression.
